holy masquerade
sketch to watercolour development
These drawings began as pencil sketches before developing into expressive blue watercolour works on transparent paper, which was layered over the original sketches. Blue tones and masking fluid were used to leave white in parts of the painting. Inspired by Venetian masks, spirituality, and fantasy, the layered imagery explores mystery, symbolism, and movement.
visual development
Each drawing explored different symbolic elements inspired by Venice, spirituality, fantasy, and movement. The layered imagery and blue tones helped develop the dreamlike atmosphere of Holy Masquerade.
presentation & installation
The transparent watercolour drawings were suspended throughout the space like floating flags, creating a layered and atmospheric installation. The movement of the paper ans soft blue tones helped create a watery, dreamlike feeling inspired by Venice, spirituality, and fantasy.
