Punk meets madonna
I developed this wearable artwork through experimentation with layering, tie-dye techniques, embellishment, styling, and mixed-media techniques. I explored texture, colour, and hand-painted details inspired by punk and rock fashion culture. The process included developing the sneakers, headpiece, painted denim, tulle layering, and metal embellishments to create a bold visual identity. Through styling, photography, and material exploration, the work evolved into an expressive wearable art piece that reflects individuality and rebellion.
process & development
garment development
The garment was developed by experimenting with painted denim, layering, tulle added to the hem, mesh, and metallic embellishments. I added layered tulle throughout the garment and around the collar to create movement and softness while contrasting the stronger punk-inspired details. I also explored tie-dyed techniques, texture, and colour layering to create a more dramatic and expressive aesthetic.
texture & surface design
I experimented with stone-washing, tie-dye techniques, hand-painting, and hand-drawn details to create texture, colour, and movement throughout the garment. The work was made from a secondhand denim jacket I upcycled. The layered surface design combined painted denim; I also used spray paint to create a more graffiti-looking 80s and punk aesthetic. Layers of tulle, cut asymmetrically with different colours, mesh, studs, and embellishments. I explored mixing recycled and decorative materials to create a unique wearable artwork inspired by Madonna in the 80s and punk, fashion, and performance styling.
headpiece development
The headpiece was created through experimenting with shape, layering, and dramatic styling inspired by punk fashion and performance culture. I added decorative wire to a headband and spray-painted the wire black, which gave it a gunmetal finish that worked well with the garment. I bent the wire into wild, rebellious shapes that visually connected to the textures and styling of the wearable garment.
sneaker development
The sneakers were customised to visually connect with the garment and the piece's overall styling. I spray-painted the shoes in red and blue tones and added studs and motifs to continue the rebellious, punk-inspired aesthetic throughout the wearable art. The customised sneakers helped tie the full look together through colour, texture, and embellishment.
styling & photography
Styling and photography became an important part of presenting the final work. I experimented with pose, movement, lighting, and composition to create images that reflected the wearable art's energetic, expressive nature.
