Punk Meets Madonna (2022)
Embodied statement
Inspired by Madonna and the punk/rock look, feminine but strong aesthetics of all types of studs, to represent strength. I wear them often, especially at parties, bars, or dinners. This is why I named it ‘Punk meets Madonna!’ She is an unapologetic performer, dances, sings and shows great strength for women, such as in her song “Express Yourself”.
I designed the look I wanted: asymmetrical hems, which I find unusual and fun. I layered tulle in all different colours and weights. I also created the asymmetrical tulle at the collar, standing it up, that punk/rock look.
Madonna wore a lot of tulle in her early career, so I was inspired by her style in addition to the look I wanted. All stud trims are sewn at hems hanging down and glued around crosses, seams, pockets, cuffs, collar, and at the back of yokes. To add to my punk look, I so much love.
I bought a denim jacket from the Salvation Army online. I tie-dyed it in red and blue, my favourite colours. Tying it up like a sausage, I put elastic bands in sections, as I wanted the colour to be randomly distributed. I am a colourful and fun person, and I wanted it to be outrageous and flamboyant to represent me as a person and the colours I wear most, as well as denim.
I also upcycled a pair of sneakers, spray-painting them red and blue and adding studs. I also created a headdress with metal and glass pearls that stood up at the top.
